Yoga is a philosophy and science of the mind, and it’s teaching are tens of thousands of years old. The Vedas are said to be the earliest written spiritual text known to a man still controversy overshadows the authorship and origin. No one source can clarify how old the Vedas are or even who wrote them, thought to have always existed, the speculated age is 12,000 years old.

Woven to the fabric of the worlds oldest living philosophy are stories, allegories, and metaphors in creation of the universe, the values and ethics of humanity and the theory of our origin and our journey to guided emancipation.

The name Rudrā is one of 1008 names of the Hindu deity Shiva and the word Akśa means tears in Sanskrit. After 1000 years of meditation, tears began to fall from the eyes of Shiva in compassion for humanity, and the tears became the Rudraksha Tree.

It is said in the Rudraksha Upanishad (an ancient Hindu text that is included in the Vedas, humanities oldest spiritual and philosophical book), that those who wear the Rudraksha close to the skin will absolve their sins.

The Rudrakśha Upaniśhat is one of the 108 scriptures of the Upanishad, (which are the final scriptures of the Vedas), and it says that even uttering the name itself – “Rudraksha” holds pranic and Karmic merit and wearing the beads is akin to wearing the sacred ash, Bhasma.

Rudraksha Mala

Rudraksha is the small earth coloured seeds that sometimes resemble an apricot kernel worn on the necks and wrists of practising yogis, spiritualist and fashionistas alike. Wearing a wreath or mala (garland) of beads is popular among western spiritualists. The mala is meant to protect you from bad vibes, balance your karmic debts and enhance your psychic powers.

The beads are strung together into a mala, (wreath) of 108 beads + 1, or 111 +1 depending on your sources. There are some texts that state in the time of Kaliyuga – which is now – 111 beads are worn. (The plus 1 accounts for the guru bead and is not included in the mantra or prayer count). Japamala is the practice of using beads in mantra, meditation and prayer. The user sits quietly and work thumb and middle finger across each bead in a clockwise direction, one mantra for each bead.

Mala can be made of other organic materials that include lava, mineral rocks and semi-precious stones, precious metals, bone, shells, pearl and wood. Different organic compounds compose different resonant frequencies – just like a medical prescription, different compounds suit different needs. But it is the Rudraksha, and Tulsi beads that remain the favourite amongst Sadhus, Yogis, devotees of Shiva and aesthetics.

Not All Beads Created Equal

The Rudraksha plant itself is a very potent healing plant, (Ayurvedic Medicine), the seeds, berries, bark, leaves, and even ash are used to treat inflammatory diseases, measles, dermal problems and skin rashes, mumps, measles, schizophrenia and cancer. There are 360 species of Rudraksha found across Australasia, and 25 are unique to India alone. The different strains appear to have various medicinal properties, as well as a different energetic and spiritual value.

The value of the beads is given based on their Mukhi – the number of individual segments counted inside the seeds. The number influences how the beads work and their spiritual value. The number of Mukhi range from 1 up to 27, 1 being the rarest. Single Mukhi Rudraksha is of the highest importance and is meant to enhance your spiritual development. The warning to someone who wears the single Mukhi is they are likely to renounce all worldly possessions and leave his family within seven days.

Rudraksha beads also have the ability to determine the difference between negative and positive energy and can tell if water has been contaminated and is undrinkable. Sadguru demonstrates this in the online video posted here. There are other mystical qualities that set the Rudraksha beads apart from other types of Mala Beads including the electromagnetic properties of the seeds and the the ayurvedic quality they poses.

For the beads to work, they need to be activated, which means you somehow switch them from inert compounds to active and receptive to the wearer and the mantra they have chosen. It might be the same as when you buy activated grains or Vitamin B12, I think!?.

You can buy activated  Rudraksha mala online or buy them directly from stores, suppliers and even gurus in India (if you go there). I am not too sure how one would know what qualifies for fraudulent or counterfeit beads, I guess only a true Yogi can understand that.

Music could hold the key to improving student engagement and learning.
Could listening to music before classroom tasks enhance the social and emotional bonds of students, enhance cognitive function and improve the overall health and wellbeing of our kids?

Music influences our thoughts, feelings and emotions, and it can also increase our ability to consolidate and store memories, learn new things and increase our social and emotional intelligence. When infant children are exposed to music with play, studies show their speech patterns, theory of mind and the ability to predict rhythms are enhanced.

Sharing music, making music and dancing with music makes us closer in physical proximity but it also means our brains are closer too. Science proves that the quality of music we listen to, sharing the listening experience and making music brings us closer together by syncing our brain waves, changing our chemistry and helping us work in unison.

Music And Dementia

In 2014 the film ‘Alive Inside’ chronicled the lives of Dementia patients in care homes that were given Ipods with their choice of music to listen to in an attempt to see whether music can help retrieve memories and stimulate communication.

The result was startling as Filmmaker Michael Rossato-Bennett along with a team of  healthcare mavericks including Dan Cohen, founder of the Music and Mind Foundation watched patients previously locked in the minds, inert and silent suddenly light up and begin singing along to their music.

In the moments after listening to familiar songs the patients were able to retrieve memories long forgotten, sing songs and remember lyrics and communicate verbally after being completely silent and unmoved for years.

This documentary spearheaded research into how music activates areas of the brain associated with memory and emotion. Scientists know that music has the potential to increase working memory and in the case of dementia patients help in the retrieval of memories, the management of behavioural problems and can assist with coordination, verbal communication, cognition and overall wellbeing.

Two Minds Really Do Think Alike

Suzanne Dikker cognitive neuroscientist explores the interaction between art, concentration and mental synchronicity to understand our social connections and our behaviour.

Her projects include the use of EEG ( electroencephalogram ) to study the brains of high school students. She discovers that students who’s brain waves are in synch feel a greater sense of wellbeing in the classroom, perform better cogntively and show high classroom engagement.

In a report published in the journal Current Biology, Dikker and her colleagues establish that brain synchronisation between students is a reliable marker of how well they like each other, and how they feel about the lesson they are undertaking.

Part 1: You, me and everything in between

If you ever have that indefinable feeling of loneliness, hopelessness and isolation, just look to the stars and know that you and I are the same as them and it took the whole universe to make you.

Biologically speaking from the smallest microbe to the largest mammal, all the enzymes that make up our genetics are the same as theirs. Just four proteins referred to as, ATCG, (Adenine, thymine, cytosine and guanine are the four nucleotides found in DNA ) are what create the myriad of life on our blue planet.

Our DNA which made up of four main atoms; hydrogen, carbon, oxygen and nitrogen are elements forged in the fire of the virgin universe some 13.8 billion years ago.  Somehow stardust spread throughout two trillion galaxies, coalesced into finite order to create you.

When we pull apart the universe strangely it too carried the equation of four final components; everything that exists within it, including the planets, people, galaxies, gases and stars is made from tiny zipping particles and they are the up quark, the down quark, electron and the neutrino.

Beyond it’s four tiny constiuents the universe is a field of energy which exists where nothing else can. It moves like a liquid, and it cannot be created or destroyed, has no known origin and does not stop moving. This field of infinite possibility is called the Quantum Field, and the physics that confirms it’s existence are our most reliable model for reality ever.

This field permeates everything in the universe, including you and me. Particles that exist within the field bundle together to create matter and this is where you and I and everything else resides as tiny bundles of particles packaged together floating in a field of energy.

The fact that you and I exist at all is extraordinary, given we are just bundles of energy packaged together, conscious, creative and alive. What makes this aliveness is something of a mystery, how it exists and why, an even bigger one and trying to figure it out may never happen so in the meantime – as the once great Sufi Poet, Rumi said, “Sell your cleverness and buy bewilderment”…

Pranic practices have the potential to alter your sensory perceptions, your biology and keep you in suspended animation – with some yogis like Sadguru, sitting for 12 days in a trance without food and water. Along with the potential to transcend the mind and the physical body – Pranayama practices have the potential to upgrade your mental software, increasing your intelligence and your awareness and lead you to the path of spiritual enlightenment.
